Jed Taylor - Head Honcho / President / co-owner
About: Growing up, Jed Taylor watched his father support their family by starting and running numerous companies. After graduating from Texas Tech University in 2001, Jed began his own journey as an entrepreneur. He simultaneously ran his own screen printing company, Chin Print, and an independent marketing company, Uncle Dagger Marketing. From there, Jed teamed up with Jon Pattillo to open Sanctuary Printshop and it’s apparel line, South Side Sanctuary. His most recent endeavor was successfully opening Austin’s finest diner, Bacon. As a local business owner, Jed loves working in the city and serving other locally-based businesses.
Experience: To learn design and screen printing, Jed always looks toward the kings of design for the best techniques and concepts. In starting his own businesses, Jed mainly self-taught the skills of design, screen printing and letterpress. The handmade quality and creativity it takes to work through a design with screen printing or letterpress is what sparked his love for these specific crafts.
What he brings to the table: Jed brings a passion for life and design that is hard to match. He strives for excellence, and will not settle for a good idea when there is a better one. Boredom is not in his vocabulary; efficiency is at his core and there is always more work to be done. His plan has always been to leave this world exhausted.
Off the clock: Jed’s creativity doesn’t stop after leaving the office, as he enjoys drawing and collecting classic arcade games in his spare time. He also loves laughing with his wife, Marian and daughter, Gracie.
Jon Pattillo - Minister of Propaganda / Creative Director / co-owner
About: A true Austin native, Jon Pattillo is the 9th generation of his family to reside in Travis County with his wife, Amy and son, Jonah Cash. Jon studied Latin American Studies & Global Communications at the University of Texas. Immediately following college, he spent six years working as an magazine photojournalist. This time served as a launch pad to starting his Austin-based businesses.
Experience: Originally trained in photojournalism, Jon’s work has been featured in publications such as Sports Illustrated, TIME, Texas Monthly and WIRED Magazine. Following his editorial career he then worked as a commercial advertising photographer on campaigns for clients such as Shiner Bock, Walmart, the University of Texas and Baylor University. In 2003, Jon combined his advertising and design experience to launch an independent music label Fat Caddy Records. He acted as both president and creative director finding particular success in branding and tour merchandising. After several years of successfully working alongside one another, Jon joined forces with Jed Taylor in 2009 to start Sanctuary Printshop. More recently, in 2011, Jon co-founded and now serves as creative director for SXSW Style X, the official fashion and style section of the annual South by Southwest conference.
What he brings to the table: Jon is all about production from start to finish. An understanding of the entire process is his forte- from the overall visual aesthetic of a product, to the memorable way it’s delivered, to how people feel about themselves while enjoying it.
Off the clock: If water is involved, Jon is there. A swimming enthusiast, he participates in the annual Alcatraz swim and is also an avid enjoyer of sailing. After he’s dried off, it’s time to smoke the barbeque.
Katie Steckman - Shot Caller / General Manager
About: After growing up in Virginia, and studying Speech Communications and History at Colorado State University, Katie Steckman made her way to Austin. She found a home with the Sanctuary Printshop in Fall 2010, and has been managing office operations ever since.
Experience: After graduating, Katie went to work for Wilderness Ranch, a Young Life backpacking camp, as Guide Team Leader. Upon her arrival in Austin, she worked for PGi before joining the Sanctuary team. The roles she played in these companies gave her experience in people and project management, which helps her keep the creative people at the Sanctuary in line.
What she brings to the table: Katie is the gatekeeper to the design and production geniuses that the Sanctuary houses. Her upbeat and caring personality serve the company well in making the process of creating and fabricating custom designs go smoothly.
Off the clock: After she leaves the office, Katie enjoys baking with one of her friends for their small catering business, Juleens.
Dan Grissom - Paperweight Champion of the World / Letterpress & Paper Specialist
About: Dan Grissom spent his childhood in the small town of Nebo, Louisiana. Growing up, he enjoyed spending time with his unique set of pets including a horse named Bob, a pig named Squealer, a raccoon named Rocky, a fish named Cha-cha, and his dogs Vern, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In his adult years, Dan earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design and a Master’s Degree in Painting and Printmaking, thus earning his job title.
Experience: With over 10 years of experience in publication layout, posters, apparel, custom sign design and construction, album packaging, books with hand set type and mural painting, it’s fair to say Dan is an expert in all things design and paper.
What he brings to the table: Dan’s fine arts background in sculpting and painting gives him a different perspective on design. Every project he works on, whether a business card or event poster, is treated as a piece of art.
Off the clock: When he’s not creating letterpress masterpieces, Dan enjoys painting. He is also a talented songwriter and musician for his band some say Leland.
Anthony Sanchez - Pharaoh / Floor Production Manager
About: Anthony Sanchez grew up in Nacogdoches, Texas, where his family instilled the value of hard work and responsibility in him from an early age. Tony’s passion for art grew during high school, and with the support of his family he decided to follow his intuition to pursue an art degree. He went on to graduate from Stephen F. Austin University with a degree in graphic design and minor in photography. When Tony moved to Austin, he had no idea the screen printing world was waiting for him. He began helping out at Sanctuary Printshop on a part-time basis, and eventually earned the job as our production manager.
Experience: The beginning of his screen-printing experience ties into Fine Southern Gentlemen, a developing clothing line that Tony and his best friend started a few years ago. As they started out, Tony designed shirts and through working with a local printer, learned the process of preparing art files for printing. Several months after starting the clothing line, he went to work for Dolphin Screen Printing. In this role, Tony gained valuable experience in client relationships, art creation, screen printing and quality control from start to finish.
What he brings to the table: Due to his experience, Tony firmly understands screen printing from the perspectives of the designer and printer. Tony uses the utmost detail in seeking to provide the most accurate representation of the designer’s vision to the client. Tony relishes in the privilege of not only creating art, but also producing a tangible product for his clients to enjoy.
Off the clock: An avid cyclist of all kinds, Tony has a love for BMX riding. Let’s just say he’s never outgrown the childhood rush of taking his bike off a sweet jump. He also loves a good cup of coffee and if screen printing were no longer an option, chances are you could find him learning how to roast and brew his own cup.
