Dan Grissom, of Sanctuary Printshop, says this is one of his favorite posters he’s ever designed and printed. Rightfully so.

With the opportunity to design the show poster for the R&B duo’s upcoming show at The Belmont, Grissom cashed in on the chance to mix their old style with the new. The bright colors characteristic of Salt-N-Pepa’s 90s days mixed with their current classy gold and black style produced the perfect look, identifiable to old and new fans alike.

Grissom used turquoise ink to highlight the black and gold, created an Austin skyline reflection in the sunglasses and added a Louis Vuitton-esque checked pattern in the background as the final touch. The woman’s face is printed using a custom-mixed metallic copper ink and perfectly half-toned, with the whole masterpiece printed on gold metallic paper. Let’s just say, it’s shiny.

The posters are signed and numbered 1-50, and will be for sale at Salt-N-Pepa’s May 12th show at The Belmont.

When The Belmont announced its sudden closure last September, it was a tough pill to swallow. So, it’s no surprise that when rumors of a remodel and reopen began circulating in February, the Austin nightlife scene started buzzing. On Friday, April 13th the rumors proved true with The Belmont’s Grand Re-opening.

The Belmont’s new ownership spent over $800,000 in renovations to transform the classic Austin bar into the city’s hottest music venue. With 10 days to go until the Grand Opening, a few final touches were needed to complete the artistic vision of the West Sixth spot. That’s when The Belmont called Sanctuary Printshop.

New general manager Raul Garcia and production manager C.J. Strehlow drove the vision for the interior visual aesthetic of the re-modeled Belmont. Sanctuary Printshop partnered with the new ownership to execute their vision by creatively using black and white vinyl graphics. The Sanctuary organized the venue’s photo bank and used the images to create a black and white photo gallery in the new space. Wall-sized black and white photos of Belmont performers cover the interior walls of the bar- including Ghostland Observatory on the curved wall, and the Kanye variety on the main staircase. The upstairs lounge sports a more traditional black and white photo gallery.

The environmental installation, along with poster designs and prints, was completed in the tight turnaround of one week- just in time for the grand opening.

The Grand Opening Weekend kicked off the new Belmont with a bang.  Performances by Mike Relm and  All My Friends on Friday were followed by And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead on Saturday, with the venue showcasing their enlarged dance floor, new sound system and signature cocktails at each of the four inside bars.

The Belmont has a stellar lineup to go along with their new digs, so make sure to stay updated on their upcoming shows. The Sanctuary will speak for Austin when we say: Welcome back, Belmont.

The Belmont’s Grand Opening weekend continued on Saturday with a show by …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead. The Belmont turned to Dan Grissom, Sanctuary Printshop, to design and screen print the official show poster.

Grissom started by hand-illustrating the Trail of Dead font seen on the poster. From there, the Sanctuary creative team went to work building the surrounding image to complete the poster. Grissom found a woodcut image of an old poison bottle he felt went with the band’s style to enclose the text. The dead rat near the bottom provided the final touch.

The Sanctuary El Camino’s last stop on its 2012 SXSW tour was the Austin Convention Center for StyleX- the two day pop up retail event showcasing emerging designers and trends. This time the Camino served up the newest designs from Sanctuary Printshop on-demand.

The Belmont’s re-opening as Austin’s newest live music hot spot comes with a long list of very Awesome musicians set to play the venue in the coming months. To help promote the upcoming shows, The Belmont and Sanctuary Printshop are partnering to bring you the most bad-ass concert posters in the Capital City. The venue’s new ownership has entrusted each poster design to Dan Grissom, of Sanctuary Printshop, and given him complete creative freedom.

GRAND OPENING W/ MIKE RELM and  ALL MY FRIENDS
The Belmont is a classy venue, and Grissom wanted to make that clear through their Grand Opening poster. Grissom executed this by using colors from The Belmont’s color scheme, hipster-style fonts and a record graphic to tie in to the DJ aspect. Poster is a digital print at 12×18.

THE CAB
Through researching The Cab, Grissom found the band often pairs beautiful imagery with war or violent images. Their last album, Symphony Soldier, attests to this contrast. Grissom stuck to the contrast on this poster by creating the background image with an image of a family hiking in the mountain, while placing battlefield images inside the chevron. The chevron shape is also used quite often in The Cab’s branding and design. Poster is a digital print at 12×18.

SHAWN MULLINS W/ GRIFFIN HOUSE
Grissom took on more of an Americana look for this poster by using old-style fonts, and the man’s image in the background. Grissom originally found the image in black and white, colored it himself, and then placed it off center and bleeding off the top to achieve the desired Americana effect. Poster is a digital print at 12×18.

During the madness that is the SXSW music festival, the corner of 7th and Red River provided an oasis. Whole Foods partnered with Dark Rye to create the Green Zone, a recharge area that ran on organic, sustainable and “green” products. In the space, you found a solar powered area to recharge phones, hanging gardens created in wooden pallets, a free water refilling station, the Whole Foods food truck serving up delicious eats and Sanctuary Printshop printing up shirts on demand every afternoon.

The Sanctuary strives to be as green as possible- using toxic free ink and reusable screens in our everyday operations- so we were thrilled to work with Whole Foods.  Besides using our “green” screens and ink, the shirts printed on were organic cotton.

The designs were a hit, and all highlighted a food item in a unique fashion. The crowd loved the experience of watching their fresh shirt being printed, and being able to rock it for the rest of the festival!

In fall 2011, Sanctuary Printshop collaborated with Alamo Drafthouse to design a fresh merchandise line. In the week leading up to SXSW, Sanctuary Printshop put the final touches on that project by designing the layout for and installing a custom merchandise display at Alamo’s new location on Slaughter Lane.

The Sanctuary added wooden trim to the merchandise cases, and then input each merchandise item into the custom-sized cases for display. The Slaughter location is the first of Alamo’s Austin cinemas to receive a new display layout; be on the lookout for more custom merchandise displays popping up at the Alamo Ritz and Lamar locations!

Wahoo’s Fish Taco came to Sanctuary Printshop in need of a re-design and installation for the stage area of the Rio Grande location.

The Sanctuary creative team decided to combine the art mediums of painting, photography, 3D signage and vinyl graphics to give the Wahoo’s stage a new look that sticks with the restaurant’s alternative vibe. The install began with cutting Wahoo’s Fish Taco out of foam core and attaching to the wall. Then, black and white alternative sports graphics were wheat pasted over the lettering. The team then painted the lettering red to make it stand out, and added the final details of hand illustrated accents. On the back wall of the stage, skateboards were hung, hand-painted with a linear pattern and backlit with LED color lights. Vinyl graphics applied to the ceiling was the last touch.

Colin’s Hope came to Sanctuary Printshop wanting a fun, dynamic design for their Best Day Ever Bash, held on January 21st. One of the artists participating in the auction for the event provided the image for the poster in full color. Dan Grissom tackled the challenge of simplifying the image without losing its dynamic quality by printing in metallic silver and medium blue on dark blue paper. Grissom used a dual halftone technique to make the image standout even after scaling it back to two colors. For the Best Day Ever Bash text, Grissom went with a retro, striped design to keep it legible and fun. The last touch on the poster is the Colin’s Hope logo artwork in the upper right hand corner. This image is derived from the original napkin sketch of the very first logo for the organization.

As a global software company that drives consumer engagement in 104 countries, Bazaarvoice still calls Austin home. The capital city lays claim to Bazaarvoice’s headquarters, and staying true to their roots during the October launch of their new brand was a priority.

In need of a local company to support the launch, Bazaarvoice hired Sanctuary Printshop to design and produce in-house merchandise and re-design the interior of the office headquarters.

Working within the company’s specific brand standards, the Sanctuary creative team designed and produced screen-printed t-shirts and posters, branded coffee mugs and custom bracelets to be given as employee gifts- at both the Austin and U.K. locations.

The Sanctuary then went to work on the interior re-design. Using a combination of paint schemes and vinyl graphics, the Sanctuary design gave the Bazaarvoice offices a whole new look.  The painted walls, matched to fit the company’s custom pantone colors, were complemented by wall sized, warm-colored vinyl graphics to give the office a very human feel. The aesthetic of the new brand was as much of a surprise to the Bazaarvoice employees as it was to the public. When Austin employees walked in to their offices on October 17th, they were amazed at the transformation. Overnight, the neutral color scheme vanished and a vibrant workspace appeared in its place.
